Making Adaptations to Homes in a CAG

Living in a Conservation Area – Upton, Newark

Upton is part of a designated Conservation Area, recognised for its special architectural and historic interest. This status helps preserve the village’s unique character, but it also means there are specific rules about what changes can be made to properties, gardens, and surrounding spaces.

If you live in Upton’s Conservation Area, you may need permission for alterations that would normally not require approval elsewhere. This includes:

Property Changes: Alterations to roofs, windows, doors, extensions, external cladding, or the addition of porches typically require planning consent to ensure they are in keeping with the character of the area.

Walls and Boundaries: The demolition or modification of boundary walls, fences or railings may need permission, especially if they are of historic or visual importance to the streetscape.

Trees and Gardens: All trees in a Conservation Area are protected.

You must notify Newark and Sherwood District Council six weeks in advance before carrying out any work, such as pruning or felling, even if the tree is on your own property.

Before making any changes, it's important to check what permissions are needed. Following these guidelines helps preserve Upton’s heritage and charm for future generations.
